Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered Straight Bourbon Whiskey Batch 90 56.42% Review

Smoke Wagon is a company headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada that is currently using sourced MGP bourbon whiskey in their current releases. MGP offers multiple different mashbills and Smoke Wagon is using the 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley. The first thing that pops to me is the beautiful bottle and the detail that went into it. All of the embossement in the glass, the wax seal, the pure weight and how it feels in your hand is perfect. Normally these are bottled in the brown glass but the batch I picked up is clear because of the glass shortage.

The Uncut Unfilitered batched at barrel proof and is one of Smoke Wagon’s fairly regular releases that if you look hard enough you might be able to find. Smoke Wagon has some older single barrels and more allocated special releases they do that I have heard are phenomenal but I have yet to try. This will be the first Smoke Wagon review I have done and I love high rye bourbons so very excited to review this one!

I paid around $70 for the bottle. Tasted from a glencarin after a 20 minute rest. 

Color – Light amber or copper. Based off the color this looks younger 

Aroma – This just smells young, a fresh oak note, corn pudding and alcohol. 

Taste – Lots of rye spice mixed with an alcohol tingle, black pepper and hot cinnamon candy. More corny sweetness that you taste in younger whiskeys. I think a few more years and this would be amazing. 

Finish – It’s an intense hot finish. Again leading me to think this is younger and hasn’t mellowed out. This drinks hotter than what it should. 

Rating – 6/10

This is young MGP bourbon that isn’t aged long enough and it drinks too hot for its proof. It does have some good flavors. This bottle was fine but nothing special. I would gladly try some of Smoke Wagon’s other releases but not sure if I would pull the trigger again for a $70 bottle.
