For years I have used a Keurig and it’s fine. When I need a quick cup before work and I am getting kids ready for school it’s the best option. However last year I was at a bachelor party and one of the grooms buddies told me about his pour over coffee he makes on the weekends when he really has time to relax. Preparing a pour over coffee provides a higher quality brew plus the aroma, mouthfeel and taste hit at a different level. This really intrigued me as I’m a big fan of food/drink experiences and relaxation!
After some research I decided to pull the trigger on a Chemex coffee pour over. Chemex pour overs have been around a long time, have awesome reviews and look great. There are numerous different pour over setups and I would like to try others to compare. I bought this knowing nothing about coffee but decided to give it a shot. I bought a cheap hand grinder (which I discovered later on is not ideal but it works fine for me at the moment) so I could buy whole coffee beans.
After a few cups made and some trial and error I was making the best coffee I’d ever had. I drink my coffee black and am happy with the grittiest cowboy coffee there is. However, after using the Chemex system with filters, it really opened my eyes to what great coffee can smell and taste like. It’s a whole experience from purchasing the beans, obtaining the perfect grind, warming your water to the correct temperature, prepping your pour over, weighing out everything properly, pouring the water over the coffee grounds and finally enjoying your final product. Each of these steps deserve their own post! Stay tuned for new posts going more in-depth the entire process.
The Chemex pour over coffee maker is super easy to use, easy to clean and I have zero complaints. This could change after I try some other pour over systems but as a newbie I recommend Chemex as a great pour over coffee maker to start with.
It does take a little more time but not significantly more and I believe the final product is phenomenal. The biggest difference I noticed is the mouthfeel of the brew. The coffee seems so much fuller and smoother it just hits on a different level. I highly recommend trying any drip coffee and am extremely satisfied with my Chemex!
