1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon Review

1792 Sweet Wheat Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

This is a wheated mashbill bourbon from Barton 1792. Most of the 1792 bourbons have a higher rye mashbill. This is unique as it is their only wheated product that is an annual limited release. This is a non age stated (NAS) bourbon. It’s believed to be in the 6-8 year range.

I believe I paid around $70 for this, quite a bit above MSRP which is around $40. At the time I had only tasted Buffalo Trace wheated bourbons and was really seeking this out. I poured and tasted this while playing with trains in the floor with my 3 year old. Living that debonair dad life! Let’s see how this stacks up to other wheated bourbons.

Color – Light straw

Aroma – A very light aroma with nothing highlighting the nose. I get a hint of light oak sweetness first, followed by the aroma of a slightly browned biscuit. Very approachable with a tingle of alcohol on the back end.

Taste – Very light and drinkable. A thinner mouthfeel with not a ton of flavor. The highlight is the wood/oak notes with touches of caramel and the burnt edges of bread.

Finish – This has a surprisingly nice finish for a 91.2 proof bourbon. It extends into the chest nicely and leaves you nice and warm. It is a bit drying on the tongue.

Rating – 5.0/10

I enjoy the Buffalo Trace wheaters and Maker’s Mark products a lot but this falls a bit short of those. 1792 Sweet Wheat lacked a lot of the fruit notes I enjoy with other wheated bourbons. I was expecting more from a highly allocated, hard to find limited release product. An easy drinker but it leaves me wanting more from this pour. Maybe a higher proof? Aged longer? It’s a fine bourbon and I’ll leave it at that.
